RYA Theory Courses
The RYA's navigation and seamanship theory courses are recognised as among the best in the world and are a complement to the various RYA practical training scheme courses. Qualified OffshoreScotland instructors will help you unravel the mysteries of navigation, pilotage, passage planning and meteorology, to ensure that you remain safe while afloat. Whether you are a sailor or a motor boater, OffshoreScotland shorebased courses equip would-be and experienced skippers with enough knowledge, at least in theory, to go afloat and safely take charge of a yacht. The next logical step is to put these skills into practice by attending an RYA practical course with OffshoreScotland on our yacht Esparanza based at Largs, on the west coast of Scotland. You can choose to complete these courses in various ways through evening classes over two terms (40 hours tuition plus exams) or by an intensive five-day course. If neither of these options are suitable then our staff at OffshoreScotland will try to come up with an alternative package to suit your timetable.
Day Skipper Theory >>>
A comprehensive introduction to chartwork, navigation, meteorology and the basics of seamanship. You will find this course invaluable if you want to learn how to start making decisions on board, and if you are considering taking the Day Skipper practical course
Coastal/ Yachtmaster Theory >>>
This is an advanced course in navigation and meteorology. The syllabus makes some provision for revision of subjects in the day skipper course but those who have not acquired a working knowledge set out in the elementary course are unlikely to be able to assimilate all the subjects covered in the advanced course in the time available.
VHF DSC Marine Radio >>>
The Short Range Certificate (SRC) is the radio operator qualification which authorises the holder to operate a VHF Radiotelephone fitted with Digital Selective Calling (DSC) on board any British vessel which is voluntarily fitted with radio equipment. If you own a marine radio handheld or fixed set, you are required by law to hold an operators licence. Learn the procedures for operation and gain the qualification on this one- day examined course.
